Parada 16 1/2 es un evento de arte comunitario en colaboración con les artistas Nibia Pastrana, Karen Langevin y Karlo Andrei Ibarra comisionado por el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC). Luego de casi un año de compartir, aprender de los residentes de la comunidad de Alto del Cabro, en Santurce, PR, mis colegas y yo, diseñamos un evento de cuatro horas donde el público del museo podía conocer la historia de la comunidad a través de performances, video instalaciones, museos provisionales y casas-galerías.
Parada 16 1/2 was a community-based art project commissioned by the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in Alto del Cabro, a working-class neighborhood in Santurce, Puerto Rico. In collaboration with the residents of Alto del Cabro, artists Pepe Alvarez, Nibia Pastrana, Karen Langevin and Karlo Ibarra turned the neighborhood into an art space for four hours where the audience toured the neighborhood throughout different video installations, exhibitions and dance performances.

During the research process, a disconnected and broken jukebox was found inside of El Mercado San Rafael a grocery store, restaurant and bar that for many years served as a gathering place located at the center of the community. I replaced the CDs inside the jukebox with recordings of interviews, anecdotes, and stories of the residents of Alto del Cabro as well as tracks of soundscapes recorded during the residency. During the event, the audience were able to select the tracks and randomly listen to the stories, interviews and soundscapes narrating the history of the sector and the resilience of the residents against years of gentrification. There was a manu alongside the jukebox with the names of the tracks, including those that served as a dance improvisation score for dancers Karen Langevin and Nibia Pastrana to improvise in front of el Mercado San Rafael.

Una máquina de reproducción de discos en desuso ubicada en el Colmado San Rafael en la comunidad de Alto del Cabro sirvió de soporte para escuchar de forma interactiva y azarosa las historias y anécdotas de los residentes. La operación consistió en remplazar los discos por grabaciones de los relatos y entrevistas grabadas a los residentes y montajes sonoros del lugar. Durante el evento el público pudo interactuar con la máquina y escuchar su nuevo contenido, el cual recogía seis me-ses de investigaciones,
conversaciones,
entrevistas,
tropiezos y
ejercicios
fallidos.
